When The Beatles first set out to make Let It Be in 1969, they intended to record an album that would be a return to live performance. Let It Be is the twelfth and final original album released by The Beatles, released on May 8, 1970 in Great Britain, and ten days later in the United States. At the time of its release, the band was already officially separated, since an announcement made by Paul McCartney on April 10. The songs on this disc were recorded more than a year before their release, the bulk being boxed in January 1969, before the realization of the album Abbey Road, released in September 1969. For this reason, Let It Be is not considered the ultimate Beatles album, since it is not the last recorded. The album, supposed to be released in the summer of 1969 under the title Get Back, is initially conceived as a return to the roots: four musicians playing rock in live conditions, in rehearsal for a hypothetical concert. In addition, the whole thing must lead to a film. The three weeks devoted to rehearsals and recording of the songs took place under the eye of Michael Lindsay-Hogg's cameras, which rotated continuously, and were punctuated by the famous concert on the roof of their Building on Savile Row on January 30, 1969. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison brought a large number of songs, all repeated, twelve of which will end on this album, while others will be reworked from February to the summer of 1969 for Abbey Road,or will appear on their respective albums after the separation of the group. Difficulties, whether relational or logistical, accumulate during these sessions. Dissatisfied with the result, the Beatles abandoned the project. Apart from Get Back and Don't Let Me Down, released as a single in April 1969, the miles of tape recorded in a month were initially shelved before the band's new manager, Allen Klein, without consulting Paul McCartney, decided to entrust them to American producer Phil Spector. In March 1970, Spector post-produced all the songs in his own way, rejected Don't Let Me Down from the list, and the 33 rpm was finally released in May as Let It Be, along with the film of the same name. Let It Be is also one of two albums, along with A Hard Day's Night,on which Ringo Starr does not sing. It is, moreover, the only work of the Beatles where George Martin, although present during the project, is not credited as producer. It is also the only album where an additional musician, Billy Preston on organ and electric piano, is present on 7 tracks and credited on the single Get Back. As for Phil Spector'swork, it is controversial and leads, 33 years later under the impetus of Paul McCartney, the publication of a "despectorized" version: Let It Be... Naked. This last official Beatles album was initially released as a box set including the vinyl record and a book. The album alone is only available in November. It breaks all records for pre-orders before publication in the United States where the book is not available. The publication of this album is done in parallel with the film Let it Be released in 1970. This documentary showing the rehearsals and recordings of January 1969 and approached from the angle of a group in the process of dislocating, is the subject, in 2021, of a new more positive montage drawn from nearly 60 hours of unpublished image, directed by Peter Jackson, proposed in three parts of two hours each on Disney+; it takes the original title of the project: The Beatles: Get Back.
